Try The Huasteco

What is up!

Hope everyone has had a fantastic week this week, happy summer! I hope it’s so fun and that you do cool stuff! Great week this week, nothing too crazy to share, but I will jump in a tell you some…

✨️ Highlights

– It is so rainy all the time. After a couple days of drying out books and backpacks I finally realized I could just put my backpack under my rain jacket, has been working extremely well. Backpack stays try and books too. Yay rain!

– I bought a Bible, but just the New Testament from the temple, and I absolutely love the New Testament! So much comfort and guidance from the scriptures and I have loved marking it up the last couple days

– We went into the hills on Friday and did a couple baptismal interviews and I love the hills and Mexicable. Luis, one of the kids we were there with, showed us his “Michael Jordan’s Last Supper” shirt that he was very proud of while his mom sighed in resignation in the back. He was thrilled to learn that if he got baptized, he could still wear the shirt! Legend says he is going to buy me one

– The most common word I heard this past week was, without a doubt, Nissan March. (2 words, that is). He has a serious skill at spotting those things from any distance. It’s like a built in visual filter, like Jared West to excellent barbers.

– Yesterday we had our last MLC in person with President and Sister Burnham and it was really spiritually powerful and had us all tearing up at the end. On top of that, my beloved Elder Budge is going home at the end of this transfer and gave his last testimony there too. I tried really hard not to be sad for the rest of the day but man it is going to be hard to say goodbye to all those amazing people. They’ve each changed my mission.

– We were in a little hole-in-the-wall store to get something to drink (I was going for Coke, of course) when my companion asked if I has tried Huasteco. I have not, and he was shocked and told me it’s a traditional drink from Jalisco, where he was from. He told me to ask the guy behind the counter for one, and I was kind of disappointed to not get a Coke but figured I’d try it. So I go “hey do you have Huasteco?” and he does “sure”, and pulls down one of them stupid plastic bottles of cheap, strong liquor that all the bums on the street drink while they yell at intimate objects and stumble about blindly. He waited for my money, probably a little disappointed when I said “actually, I changed my mind, do you have Coke?” My companion was losing it and laughed to himself about it all day. Stinkin hump.

📖 Sciptures!

I love the New Testament and I’ve loved reading it this week! I think there is so much good comfort and advice that comes from there and so I thought I’d share a couple good things I read thus week.

First, James 1:22 which is probably one of my Dad’s favorites and has become one of my favorites while being out here as a missionary:

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only.”

I love that idea of applying the things we learn and doing them! It’s one thing to know that daily study in the scriptures is a good thing, and it’s something else entirely to do it. That is the most important part of faith, is that it is a principle of action. The scriptures aren’t all that important if we don’t do what they teach, nor are answers to prayers if we don’t act on the guidance we get. It’s the doing that matters, that’s why we listen in the first place!

I also loved a verse I read in Doctrine and Covenants while I’ve tried to somewhat follow the Come Follow Me reading! Section 54 verse 10:

“And again, be patient in tribulation until I come; and, behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me, and they who have sought me early shall find rest to their souls.”

I loveeeee that last line, and they who have sought me early shall find rest to their souls.

I think that is a great comfort scripture and also a call to action. Like being doers of the word, we have to seek the Savior. It’s not a passive ride-a-long, it’s an active and constant search. It requires effort and sacrafice, but what better blessing than finding true, lasting rest through Jesus Christ!

So, don’t let the word of God (whether through scriptures, prayer, prophets, whatever it may be) go in one ear and out the other. That’s not how it works, unfortunate as it may sound! So make the consistent effort this week to seek the Savior, to be patient, and to act on what He will teach you. Apply what you learn, don’t just listen to it and move along.

Anyways, enough of this week’s soapbox! I love you all, thanks for reading if you made it to here, and remember that you are in my prayers! Have an amazing week, and go make it one! Talk soon!!
